Check out my new kitchen update with painted subway tile and a shiplap range hood. This space finally feels finished!
Today is the day I can finally say our simple kitchen update is done! I can’t wait to show you the before and after pictures! That being said, remember, this is a simple update with budget friendly makeovers. Our kitchen wasn’t in terrible need of a makeover before, but there were a few things I wanted to do to make it more functional.
I’m no stranger to budget kitchen updates. If you’ve been around the blog for a few years you might remember our old modern farmhouse kitchen update for under four thousand! Goodness, with inflation, you won’t see prices like that again!
Let’s get back to my current kitchen and show you what this kitchen looked like before the update.
It wasn’t bad, but I’ve never been a fan of the gray subway tile with gray grout. Also, I knew I wanted to cover the vent hood. The area above the vent hood has always been a sore sight for me. I thought adding shiplap would tie the kitchen to the rest of the house where we have shiplap walls.
I also felt it was time to get rid of the “temporary” nook where I replaced the fridge with a cabinet and shelves. I say temporary because I had no intention of living with it for four years. Where does time go?

I almost forgot how far I’ve come with this kitchen! The last thing I did, or hired someone to do, was add shiplap around the vent hood. I thought about DIYing this myself, but ultimately, I wanted it to look professional so I thought it would be best to hire a professional.
Shiplap Range Hood
I’m so glad I decided to add shiplap around the range hood. I hate that I waited 4 years to do it! I also decided to add a little stained wood the bottom of the hood to match the wood tones in the coffee bar. What do you think?
I was worried at first that it would be too much white with the white painted cabinets, white painted subway tile and then white shiplap, but I think it’s perfect!
I’m thrilled with it so far! With just a little paint, a few organization solutions, new shiplap range hood and a fun coffee bar I can finally say this space is done!
Before and After Kitchen Update pictures
I love the contrast from the white to the natural wood tones. I think the dark granite helps draw just enough visual interest to make this space interesting.
