Creating a DIY canopy bed using command hooks offers a simple and affordable way to transform a bedroom. This approach requires minimal tools and provides a unique personalized touch without damaging walls or ceilings. The versatility of command hooks are a great way for renters to add a touch of their own personalization to a bed frame.

All you need is lightweight fabric of your choice or curtain panels (I chose sheer fabric), curtain rods and command hooks. This method not only saves money but adapts easily to different room layouts like a dorm room or a child’s bedroom. Whether for aesthetic appeal or a cozy atmosphere, bed canopies bring elegance to any space.

Essential Tools and Materials
The materials I used for this project involved simple and affordable options. Let me show you.

Types of Command Hooks
Choosing the right command hooks is crucial for stability and weight support. Even though I’m using the light weight command hooks that only hold .5 lb, there are also Medium Command hooks that can hold up to 2 pounds, and large hooks to support up to 5 pounds, ideal for thicker drapes.
Damage-free installation is a core feature, ensuring walls remain in pristine condition especially if you’re like me and you like to constantly change your decor.
Choosing the Right Fabrics
Selecting the right fabric impacts both the appearance and drape of the canopy. Lightweight cotton offers a breezy feel and is easy to drape, whereas velvet provides a luxurious touch. Sheer fabrics allow for light diffusion, creating a cozy atmosphere. If privacy is a concern, opt for heavier materials that block light and add warmth.
Measuring Tools
Accurate measurements are needed for a well-fitting canopy. A measuring tape with a level is important for taking precise dimensions of the bed and ceiling area. Consider a yardstick for straight edges and alignment when cutting and arranging fabrics.
Laser levels can be useful to ensure hooks are aligned evenly. Marking tools such as chalk or removable markers help outline hook placements without permanent marks.

Preparation Steps
Creating a DIY canopy bed with command hooks involves carefully measuring the space and planning the placement of hooks to ensure a stable and stylish canopy.
Space Assessment and Measurements
Evaluate the Room Dimensions
Assess the dimensions of the room where the bed is located. This ensures that there is enough space around the bed for the canopy to hang naturally.
This is where my issue came in. At first I wanted to install the canopy around the entire bed, but due to the ceiling fan, it limits the type of canopy I could install. I thought about using an embroidery hoop to install the popular “canopy tent” look. She did not want that, so I decided to create a simple canopy with just two side panels near the head of the bed.
Measure the Bed
Measure the length and width of the bed. Knowing these dimensions helps determine the amount of fabric needed and the exact placement of command hooks for optimal canopy coverage.
Command Hook Placement Strategy
Select the Hook Type
Choose command hooks that can support the weight of the fabric. The weight capacity of the hooks is crucial to prevent any collapse.
Plan the Hook Layout
Use the measurements to plan where each hook will be placed. A common approach involves placing adhesive hooks at each corner of the bed and at the midpoint of each side.
Since I wasn’t placing fabric all around the bed, all I needed was a hook at each end of the curtain rod. So four command hooks in all.
Attaching Horizontal Supports
Curtain rods are essential for maintaining the structure of the canopy. Select a lightweight yet durable material, such as wooden dowels or metal curtain rods, which are easy to handle and install.
Measure the distance between secured command hooks. Cut the chosen material into pieces that fit precisely between the hooks for a clean, finished look.

Assembling the Canopy
Creating a DIY canopy bed with command hooks involves precise fabric draping and ensuring everything is symmetrical.
Draping the Fabric
When draping the fabric, maintain a loose hold to prevent wrinkles. Tuck and adjust as needed to achieve the perfect balance. I chose to tuck the bottom of both sides of sheer curtains near the head board to see if I liked that look. I did, so I decided to tie the curtains together and attach them to the back wall.
Step back and enjoy your new DIY canopy! The great thing about these command hooks are that they shouldn’t damage the wall when removed.

This is the view when you walk into my daughters room. Speaking of her room, we’ve lived in our home 7 years and I’ve made over this room a few times. Check out the different stages below.

Back to what the room looks like today!

You can see I tied them back, but if you want them to hang down, this is what it looks like.

Was this a simple enough project to replicate? I hope so.
