Painting Laminate Cabinets and Laminate Furniture Tutorials

This page is dedicated to painting laminate cabinets and laminate furniture posts with tutorials on how to paint laminate surfaces.

I’ve written a handful of posts that revolve around painting laminate surfaces and painting laminate cabinets. I’ve decided to create this page to be a useful resource to provide information about painting anything laminate!

Let’s be honest, a lot of furniture or even cabinets these days are made from some sort of laminate. Even though there are a lot of different grades of laminate, they can all be painted with the same basic principals.

How to paint Laminate Cabinets

I previously painted our laminate kitchen cabinets two ways. In the first tutorial, I did the kitchen island cabinets with primer, milk paint and a top coat. It worked very well!

You can see my full ‘how to paint laminate cabinets’ tutorial here. I titled it ‘painting laminate cabinets without prep work’ because I didn’t do any sanding. I detailed all the reasons why I didn’t sand the laminate surface in my post.

I also shared a full video on how I painted this kitchen island. Just a side note; this was my first YouTube video so it’s not the best quality, but all the information I shared is spot on!

After I finished painting the kitchen Island I was so pleased with how it turned out that I chose to paint the rest of the cabinets a light gray color to accent the white. Unfortunately, the milk paint product I used by General Finishes did not come in the shade of gray I wanted.

So I scoured the internet looking for a good cabinet paint in the shade I wanted. I ended up choosing an Ace Hardware cabinet paint that they mixed into the color Winter Gates by Benjamin Moore.

I made one mistake when I applied this paint. I didn’t use primer. 🙁

Most of the reviews said they did not use primer first because this particular paint has a bonding agent built in it.

So did it work ok even without the primer? Yes it did. That being said, I would still opt for the extra level of protection with a primer if I were to paint the laminate cabinets again.

A year after I painted the cabinets, I wrote an extensive year in review on how the painted laminate cabinets have held up with pictures.

Overall I was super pleased with the painted cabinets and their durability over time. Like I said before, the only thing I would have done differently was to use a primer before I used the Ace Hardware cabinet paint.

Now that I’ve shared all about painting laminate kitchen cabinets, what about repainting them?

How to Repaint Laminate Kitchen Cabinets

I wrote all about how to paint laminate cabinets in a few posts earlier. Now that the painting laminate kitchen cabinet trend is about 10 years old, what do you do with those cabinets that probably need a good paint touch up?

If you don’t have the budget to buy new ones, you have to refinish them or repaint them! I wrote a post with details on how to repaint laminate cabinets.

I recently created my own DIY floating desk with Butcher block and shared about how to paint laminate kitchen cabinets without a paint sprayer.

Spoiler alert; I’ve had this desk for over a year now and there isn’t a scratch on the surface of the cabinets yet! I’ve also shared an instructional video on how to paint melamine cabinets with a brush and roller.

I hope I’ve provided some resourceful information and as always, let me know if you have any questions.
