Simple tutorial on how to hang a porch swing with a swing makeover. Learn a few easy steps to hang your own porch swing!

How does that saying go; front porch sittin’ and sweet tea sippin’. I love it! I hope to be doing a lot of that this summer. Mainly because I just finished installing our lovely porch swing. We’ve never had a porch swing before and boy and I’m excited to finally call one my own! As I was scratching my head trying to decide how to safely install this heavy piece of furniture, I thought it would be a good idea to share what I did. Here we go with how to hang a porch swing along with my porch swing makeover.

How to Hang a Porch Swing with a Swing Makeover

Porch Swing Makeover

It all started when we were gifted a swing from my in laws. They used it for years at their old house, but had not used it since they moved.

It was covered in mildew and the wood had seen better days. There wasn’t any wood rot, so I knew a good makeover would make it look new again!

I won’t get into too many details about how I up cycled this porch swing because I detailed a post all about how to paint and maintain outdoor furniture.

  • The first thing you need to do is make sure the wooden beams that will be supporting the swing are stable.

This is what our porch roof looked like:

I knew I needed to add a little extra support to the beams.

  • Once the beams are well supported, you need to purchase porch swing hardware.

How to install the porch swing hardware:

There are many different types of hardware for porch swings. HERE is a similar set of hardware that I used.

Always follow the instructions for the hardware that you purchase.

  • To install ours, we drilled the pilot hole first.

  • Then begin to manually screw the hardware into the support beam.

  • Next take a long screw driver and push it through the porch swing hanger. Then rotate it around to easily screw the hardware through the beam.

  • It should sit flush against the wood beam when you’re done.

My porch swing makeover was almost complete!

The last thing I did was wrap the porch swing chain with sisal rope. This easy budget friendly update made a HUGE difference. I also shared how it’s held up over a few years and a lot of inclement weather.

After adding a few accessories it was time to sit back, relax and enjoy. Porch swing sittin’ and sweet tea drinking was about to begin!

I would love to do this with our front yard bench swing! We have a metal frame that’s currently dark (originally black but has now faded). Two questions:
    1. What color would you go with for the frame to update the look (we plan to paint the swing white)? White? Keep it dark?
    2. How do you think the rope will do against the elements? I absolutely love this aspect of the makeover. I want to be sure it lasts!

Thank you so much for this idea. We just bought a lake house and have three swings that need makeovers. Your idea was so easy to do for a beginner like me, which I LOVE. I’m working on swing one thanks to you! I can’t believe how much the bleach helped! Beautiful work and thanks so much for making quarantine productive for me.

  3. Great makeover!! Why not bring this post over to my new UNLIMITED Monthly Link Party going on now!

What a great transformation. Love how you used the rope to cover the chain.
