Pillows are such a cozy and affordable way to add texture to a home. That is, if you know HOW to shop for great pillows that don’t break the bank. I’m going to share with you an affordable Pillow buying guide for modern farmhouse and boho pillows.
When I think of modern farmhouse style I think of cozy, neutral and shiplap!
Pillows are a HUGE part of creating a modern farmhouse or boho style.

Pillow can be expensive, even at stores like Target. The cheapest I’ve seen pillows there are around $19.99.
So how do you buy a set, say four, of pillows and not spend $80-$100? Let me show you how I do it.

Affordable Pillow Buying Guide
In my opinion, the best way to buy pillows is to buy a set of four pillow inserts (18 by 18 is the most common) and then purchase pillow covers. You can buy pillow covers on Amazon as cheap as $5 each! Believe it or not, the quality of the pillow covers are really decent (I have quite a few $5 amazon pillow covers).
The other huge advantage to this is that if you get tired of the look and want to change things up, all you have to do is switch out the pillow cover rather than buying all new.
This can also give an old couch a whole new look without buying a new couch!
Also, did I mention that storing pillow covers is SOOOO much easier than storing pillows?
In this post, I’m going to show you how to buy entire pillows (pillow covers plus pillow inserts) for around fifteen dollars. Most pillow covers come as a set of two or four. When you add up the cost of each pillow cover plus the cost of each insert, I’ve calculated them to be around $15.
Remember, you will only have to buy the inserts one time. Once you have your pillow inserts, you will only have to purchase pillow covers from here on out.
First let’s look at pillow inserts. I’ve found a really good set below. These are polyester fill.
When you add it up, each insert comes out to be about $6.25. For the price, you can’t beat it.
That being said, if you can pay a little more, I prefer a down filled pillow insert. They hold their shape better and look better I think.
Another huge tip; use your old pillows and just buy covers for them!
Tip when buying pillow inserts and pillow covers
My biggest tip before you purchase anything is this;
Purchase pillow inserts that are one size larger than the pillow covers.
This creates a fuller look for you pillows. My biggest pet peeve is when pillows look slouchy and don’t hold their shape.
Holiday pillow buying
I purchased a set of 16 by 16 Christmas pillows from Walmart for $5 each last holiday season. Rather than storing them (pillows are a pain to store), I decided I would purchase pillow covers for them. All I have to do when Christmas rolls around is pull the covers off and BAM, new holiday pillows.
Once you’ve purchased a few pillow inserts OR you’ve chosen a few of your own pillows to cover, it’s time to purchase affordable pillow covers!
Where do you buy affordable pillow covers?
My best resource for buying affordable pillow covers has mostly been Amazon. Like I said before, I’ve purchased $5 pillow covers and they’ve held up like a champ.
Full disclosure: Most of the $5 pillow covers come from overseas. It did take about two weeks to get them. For example, I purchased these pillow covers, set of two for $8.95 (less than $5 each), and they have held up great!
You can see a few of these pillows in my home below.
If you prefer not to purchase from Amazon, another resource for great pillow covers is Etsy. There are so many small businesses that make great pillow covers. Come on over HERE to see some.
Now that I’ve shared my guide on how to buy affordable modern farmhouse and boho pillows, I’ll share a few of my favorites.
Striped Gray Throw pillow covers, set of two
Set of four black modern farmhouse pillow covers
Pack of two corduroy solid pillow covers (multiple colors)
Set of four boho style pillow cases
Home sweet home and arrows pillow covers
Set of two velvet pillow covers in assorted colors
Set of four indigo tie dye pillow covers
Set of four boho style pillows
The great thing about this “pillow buying guide” is that after you’ve purchased your inserts, you will only be purchasing pillow covers from here on out!
This means that every time you get the itch to switch (if you know what I mean) it won’t cost anything other than a pillow cover.
Can I get a loud Horray for only having to store pillow covers!
I hope this post has been informative for you and you’ve found a few tricks on how to decorate without breaking the bank.
Thanks for stopping by friends.
