What is it with “open shelving” that makes it so popular lately? Why do we choose to want to display our dishes out in the open just to collect dust? Was it the show “fixer upper” that started the craze? Either way, I’m hooked! So now the question was how would I incorporate some open or floating shelving in my house for cheap?
I have been wanting to make some DIY FLOATING SHELVES for a long time now, and thanks to Shanty-2-Chic for their great free DIY plans, I decided to build their Floating Dining Room shelving.

Now I did do a few things differently. This material list calls for a pocket hole jig and pocket screws, neither of which I had. So instead I just bought thick screws and used a drill bit made for “counter sinking” the wood. The purpose of counter sinking is to create a hole large enough so when you drill the screw into the wood it site “flush” against the wood.
Also, I went ahead and had Home Depot cut the wood for me (it really wasn’t that many cuts) so all I had to do was assemble.
All the materials including screws totaled about $140.00.
Sorry for all the “extra garage junk,” but this is what I’ve been working with. Ok, so pictured above is the “base” or the piece that is screwed directly into the wall. I used 4 large screws to attach this to the wall by drilling into the studs. My dad joked that it would be so sturdy he could sleep on it! Since these shelves would be holding all my fine china and crystal, I had to make darn sure nothing (not even an earthquake) would make these shelves fall.
My next step was staining the rest of the wood that creates the “shelf.”
About to stain the pine.
Continuing to stain………..
Done staining…..now to assemble.
You need two sets of hands to assemble these shelves. Oh and FYI the directions are only for 1 shelf, so double them if you want 2. Here are my FLOATING SHELVES mounted on the wall.
Super excited how these shelves turned out! Before, my china was tucked away in a cupboard and I felt like it wasn’t displayed. Not anymore! Lets just hope and pray my little ones don’t throw a ball and knock something over…
